How Are Most Televisions Tested by Companies? A Few Criteria in a Row When Buying a New Tv

Hundreds of new TVs come onto the market every year. Most manufacturers change almost their entire range every year. Several test labs test the most popular picture sizes, brands and specific models throughout the year with Panasonic TV’s.

What Types of Tvs Are Tested?

As a rule, both LCD televisions and OLED televisions are tested, with a picture diagonal of 32 inches (81 cm) to 65 inches (165 cm). These are the most popular sizes in the Netherlands. See which televisions were tested as Best in Test or view all popular televisions.

How Is It Tested?

Most televisions are tested on more than 100 points according to a fixed test program. Each test part is weighted for a certain percentage in the total test judgment. Below you will find an overview of the most important test items.

Image Quality

The image quality part counts for an average of 45 percent in the total test score.

Viewing Test

A panel of experts evaluates various film scenes for sharpness, color reproduction, contrast, smoothness and image errors. The image quality is assessed for different inputs and image signals.

  • Technical measurements
  • Each television also undergoes a number of technical measurements:
  • What is the contrast ratio
  • Viewing angle of the television
  • The visibility of the image under incident light
  • Even distribution of backlight for LCD and LED televisions
  • Smoothness of the image (for fast images).

Sound Quality

Sound quality weighs 25 percent of the final verdict. To determine the sound quality, the maximum sound intensity is measured and a listening test is conducted. The experts listen to different sound fragments, such as pop music, classical music and a fragment from a Game TV series or film.

Ease of Use

Ease of use counts for 10 percent in the test. It comes down to zapping to get a good picture of a TV during daily use. Other parts of the TV test ease of use are:

The TV remote control

Electronic program guide

Teletext (not for long)

The selection menu

Operation with the buttons on the TV itself.

Smart TV

How well the Smart TV menu works counts for 10 percent of the test. The ease of use of the accompanying app store and browser are considered.

Connections and Tuners

The number of video and audio connections and which (digital) tuners are or are not included in the TV. They also often look at other connection options such as USB, WiFi and NFC. All this counts for a small 5%.

Energy Consumption

The energy consumption is measured in the on position, in standby and in the off position (if possible). Based on this, they give an indication of the annual energy consumption and its cost. It is assumed that a television is on average 4 hours a day and as much as 20 hours in standby during the year.
